Exhibition Sections

The Center, with exhibits dating from 1821 until recently, is a trip back in time. It consists of seven sections, showrooms.

 

  • The Antechamber

    The antechamber introduces us to the content Εργαστήριο μελέτης & έρευνας της ιστορίας της εκπαίδευσης & του διδασκαλικού επαγγέλματοςof the exhibits and is the starting point for thinking about the history of educational history. There is a panoramic presentation of some indicative exhibits dating from 1898-1964, for example, a school uniform, a school bag, a student desk, some representative images with students and teachers, student clubs, remnants of the decade of the fifties during project implementation Marshal, two bells the first of which comes from the U.S. Navy and the other from the period of the Egyptian occupation of Crete, as shown by the inscription on it. Exposed are even the famous Rigas Chart issued for educational purposes and distributed to schools, and a bust of Alexander the Great , for obvious reasons: the development of the national identity of students. Also, there are a number of exhibits of the methods of student punishment of the times...

  • The Didaskaleio

    The section called 'Didaskaleio'-Pedagogical AcademyΕργαστήριο μελέτης & έρευνας της ιστορίας της εκπαίδευσης & του διδασκαλικού επαγγέλματος, contains exhibits from the history of teacher education in Crete (1901-1986). In the center of it, there is the office of the Director of Teaching and Pedagogical Academy, with seals, drawers for keeping records, pictures of the staff and the students / a study dating from 1902, an album with photos of the Academy graduates and other office items dating from 1915 as well as records depicting the political conscience of future teachers.

     

     

     

     

  • The Study Room of the Didaskaleio and the Pedagogical Academy Heraklion

    The Study Room of the DidaskaleioΕργαστήριο μελέτης & έρευνας της ιστορίας της εκπαίδευσης & του διδασκαλικού επαγγέλματος and the Pedagogical Academy Heraklion. This is a very important section of the exhibition space given that upon it, the study and the research of the prospective teachers was based, always in accordance with the curriculum of the School of Crete and the Pedagogical Academy of Heraklion. The collection of its study material starts from the foundation of the School of Crete and gradually extended until the end of the operation of the Pedagogy Academy.

     

     

     

     

  • A Representation of the classroom from the late 19th century

    Representation of the classroom from the late 19th centuryΕργαστήριο μελέτης & έρευνας της ιστορίας της εκπαίδευσης & του διδασκαλικού επαγγέλματος. The Department is divided into three sub-sections. The first part has more exhibits and a representation of an earlier class. There is a section of the artistic calligraphy lessons and of the musical instruments used in the classroom, while books, notes calligraphy and paintings representative of students are complimentary of this section. There are even old sewing machines used by the teachers for the education of girls in the household tasks.

     

    The final sub - section, is a relatively newer presentation of a class with students’ desks, maps and visual aids on the walls for the teaching of the course of the naturalist studies dating from the early 20th century.

     

     

  • The audiovisual media section

    The audiovisual media section.Εργαστήριο μελέτης & έρευνας της ιστορίας της εκπαίδευσης & του διδασκαλικού επαγγέλματος Here are on display the "technological means" used in education. These include writing, sound and image with typewriters and polygraphs, with record players and film projectors, overhead projectors and episcopes. It is important to refer to the rich collection of educational films of the era, which is operating as it has become possible to reuse by a group of maintainers in the Centre.

     

     

     

     

  • The section of the naturalist subjects

     The section of the naturalist subjects. Εργαστήριο μελέτης & έρευνας της ιστορίας της εκπαίδευσης & του διδασκαλικού επαγγέλματοςIt is next to the audiovisual section and includes an old school barometer from Paris dating back to the early 20th century, chemistry and physics instruments, rocks, shells and fossils of animals used for the teaching of geology, marine life, physics, chemistry, stereometric, anthropology, etc. The collection features the silk cocoons and the raw silk from the 20s, and a representation of the life cycle of bees and honey production. Among others, there are models of the human heart and the liver dating back to the late 19th century.

     

     

     

  • The Map Section

     

    In the Center, there are thematic mapsΕργαστήριο μελέτης & έρευνας της ιστορίας της εκπαίδευσης & του διδασκαλικού επαγγέλματος categorised by subject matter and course: Mythology, Religious History, Zoology, Plant Science, Anthropology and Language Teaching.

     

    One of the most important exhibits in this section is the "Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments book", which was printed in 1821 in Moscow by the Zosimadon Brotherhood of Ioannina and served as a guide during the Othoman occupation in Crete.
